What Is Liraglutide?

Liraglutide is an FDA-approved GLP-1 receptor agonist available as Saxenda for weight management and Victoza for type 2 diabetes. It was one of the first GLP-1 medications approved specifically for weight loss before semaglutide and tirzepatide became available.

Liraglutide reduces appetite, slows gastric emptying, and improves insulin sensitivity. Clinical trials showed average weight loss of 8% of body weight at the highest dose. It is administered via daily subcutaneous injection, unlike the weekly injection of semaglutide.

While somewhat less effective than newer GLP-1s for weight loss, liraglutide has the longest clinical safety track record in this class.
